Wells Fargo & Co. began issuing new "contactless" credit cards that speed up transactions.
Wells Fargo Visa Platinum and Wells Fargo Visa Signature account holders whose cards have expired will receive replacement cards with the contactless feature; customers can also request a new card with the contactless upgrade.
San Francisco-based Wells said it is on track to distribute 400,000 cards by the end of 2006.
The bank offers protection against unauthorized transactions made at merchants, over the phone, on the Internet or at ATMs.
Wells Fargo Card Services has 6.9 million credit card accounts.
